Hello 5th grade families,
I hope that everyone had a wonderful week, and a great Thanksgiving. I can't believe it's almost time for Christmas! What a joyful time of year.
This week, we began our new unit on adding and subtracting fractions. We began with a review of fractions from last year and practiced making equivalent fractions, which is an important piece in adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. So far, we have just began to add fractions. This unit will continue next week, and we are looking to test the week before Christmas break. I will let you know of an updated date most likely sometime next week.
Language: We completed week 3 of our language packet. The new review concept that was introduced was interjections. We had fun practicing reading sentences with interjections!
Spelling: My class met with Mrs. Dillon Monday-Thursday to work on making different types of two-syllable words and discussing how to tell if a syllable is open or closed. Then, we practiced listening to these words and trying to hear the vowel sounds and if the syllables were open or closed. We also discussed the spelling of these words. This was a challenge, but the kids did GREAT! We are moving on to the next activity next week, which is working with syllables with 'Schwa'.
Reading and writing: we have been continuing through our reading unit on Hatchet and our Book review project for the STA library.
*I am sending out book orders for December in case anyone would like to order books as Christmas gifts! In order for these books to come in time for Christmas, orders need to be placed no later than December 12th.
Important dates this week:
Thank you for all of your support! Please let me know if you have any questions.
Have a blessed weekend!
PS- Please keep the Kuhnert and Andary families in your prayers. There was a horrible car accident last night after a Lansing Catholic hockey game involving two parents of these families.
