Hello 5th grade families,
Happy Friday! What a busy and hard working week we've had.
This week, our fifth graders had two of their very first tests (math and social studies). On Wednesday we had our first assessment on Chapter 1 of our math textbook, which focused on whole-number and decimal place value. Many students worked very hard and performed well on the assessment- excellent job! If your child scored below an 82% (B-), they have the opportunity to do test corrections on a separate sheet of paper and return it to me. They will receive points back for any problems that they do correctly, but to keep things fair they can only earn up to a B- grade. I have offered my lunch or after school time this week to work with any students that needed help, which is always an option for them. If your child has not yet turned in their corrections, these should be returned within the next week or so. I am always happy to work with anyone during lunch or before/after school!
In Language Arts, we have been continuing our reading of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. I have to say, we have been having some excellent discussions! Students have been digging deep to make connections between our text and the Bible, which has made for great conversation. Additionally, we also had the opportunity to look up certain verses in the Bible and compare them to one of our main characters, Aslan. We have also been practicing writing about reading through the form of reading response, where we have made predictions and connections to what we have read in our book. This is a great reading practice that can be done at home as well- feel free to encourage your child to make predictions, connections, or reflect on what they are reading at home! Lastly, Ms. Caitlin Dillion, our school reading specialist, visited on Monday to kick off our spelling program. Students reviewed the different types of syllables, and were very excited to see her! This will continue next week, and we will be starting working in spelling groups shortly after.
Important Dates for the Upcoming Week:
-Monday through Wednesday: NWEA testing. This will take place in my classroom during math and language arts time. We will be spending Monday on Language Arts, and Tuesday will be spent on Math (Wednesday is a day for any extra time needed/make-up tests). There is nothing that your child needs to prepare for, I just highly suggest making sure that they get a good night's rest and eat a good breakfast the morning of. Also, I would strongly encourage you to not schedule any absences/appointments during these days- these tests provide teachers with helpful student growth data.
-Thursday: Picture day! Please make sure to send your child to school with their picture forms filled out and ready to be turned in by this date. If your child did not bring their form home (this was sent home yesterday), please let me know as soon as possible and I will send home another. Students may wear something other than their uniforms as long as it follows dress code (be sure to look nice!).
That's all for now- please have a wonderful weekend and contact me if you have any questions.
Way to work hard this week, 5th graders!
