Dear 5th grade families,
Happy weekend! I cannot believe week two has already flown by. Thank you for coming to Curriculum Night last night, I hope that you found it helpful! It was wonderful to see everyone as well as meet some new faces.
This week, we began our first units in math and language arts. In math, unit one focuses on place value, addition, and subtraction. We have started off by reviewing place value concepts that the students were introduced to last year, as these understandings are very important to maintain in 5th grade math. The beginning of next week will be spent using manipulatives and math games for additional place value practice, and then we will be moving on to other unit one concepts.
In language arts, we began a book study on C.S. Lewis' The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Using this text, we will be having discussions its story elements, strong character development, and connections with the Bible. Additionally, we have begun to review another familiar concept from 4th grade: Literature Circles. So far, students have had the opportunity to practice the role of the 'Literary Luminary' and 'Word Wizard.' Once we practice each of the roles together, literature circles will be used every so often. These are a great way for students to practice different reading strategies and share their understandings in a cooperative group.
-Paper bag projects: Our class has been loving getting to know each other through our paper bag project presentations! I have been very impressed with how supportive and encouraging we are with each other. Many have been begging to share every day! About 3 students have been going every day, so these should conclude sometime next week.
-Mass: Please congratulate your fifth grader on being a GREAT leader with their kindergarten buddy today! We truly are fifth grade leaders, and today that showed as we helped our kindergarten friends in their first all school mass. Way to go!
-Class Dojo: Behavior reports will start being sent out next Friday (you will receive one every week). Today was our 'test' week. Very positive experience so far!
A look ahead:
-Our class will lead K-5 mass next week on Wednesday
-September 25th: Picture Day
Enjoy your weekend and GO GREEN!
