Hello 5th grade families,
I hope that everyone had a wonderful week and weekend! It definitely felt great (yet busy) to have the kids for a full week of school. A little over one more week until Thanksgiving break! I can't believe it. It was great to see some of you at Faith and Fundamentals on Friday- with this being my first time seeing the event, I just want to say that it is truly touching to see how much parent help and dedication was put into the event. What an accomplishment! Thank you to all that helped out in any way.
Last week we were finally able to start some new concepts in Language Arts! We began reading Hatchet, which students seem to love so far. I had the chance to read this book with my fourth graders last year, so I am very excited to share my love of this story again this year. We will be focusing on the characteristics of adventure and survival stories, as well as key reading comprehension strategies. This unit is also going to be utilizing Literature Circle groups, so students will be meeting in groups a few times a week and carrying out individual responsibilities to extend their understanding of the text. Tomorrow and Tuesday, we will be launching our persuasive writing unit, which will be Project Based. Mrs. Mayotte will be talking to our students about the need for student created book reviews for our STA library books, and our 5th graders will be creating their own book review for a non-fiction narrative book of their choice. These will be turned into QR codes, which will be accessible to all STA students!
This week in math, we will be wrapping up unit 3. Our review will be sent home tomorrow (Monday) and corrected in class on Thursday. The last lessons will take place on Monday-Wednesday, and we will spend Thursday-Monday reviewing. The unit 3 math test will be on Tuesday, November 25th.
Events this week: Ms. Dillon, our reading specialist, is hosting a literacy night on Wednesday at 7pm in Father Mac Hall.
*reminders: book orders are due Tuesday, November 25th!
Thank you for all of your support! Have a great week.
