Hello and happy Friday!
I couldn't believe that I was just typing 'week 3' into the subject line- time is already flying by! I have to say, our fifth graders have been impressing me day after day. We really have a group of hard working and genuinely wonderful kids, and I cannot say enough how happy I am with how the year is going.
Our first full week was quite the busy one! We are adjusting well to our busy schedule and exchanging classes. Something we have been working on is getting ready quickly and quietly before we exchange classes. This is where organization comes into play- it is critical. Helping your child stay organized at home is something that can help them out with this- any positive habits that start at home typically carry over to school.
We are nearing the end of unit one, which has been focusing on whole number and decimal place value. We are looking to have our first test on Wednesday of next week, and will be reviewing on Monday and Tuesday. This weekend, I am sending home an instruction sheet for IXL.com, which is a math practice website. I asked our students to visit this website to practice place value concepts. Another helpful idea may be to review a Billions through Thousandths place value chart with your child.
We have continued to practice our literature circle roles- this week the focus was Word Wizard and Stellar Summarizer. We discussed pausing when coming to an unfamiliar or interesting word, and checking for comprehension. Also, we have practiced monitoring our comprehension of the important details of the story, as we prepared to use our retelling skills to write a summary. Lastly, we've had some great discussions about the connections between the Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and the Bible- be sure to ask your child about it!
-To honor September 11th, we spent our language arts time talking about the event and asking questions. Then, we learned a little about some of the victims of 9/11 and wrote a special tribute to them. Very emotional day, but I am very proud with how mature and thoughtful our fifth graders are. We also said a prayer as a fifth grade to honor the victims.
-Wednesday's mass went wonderfully! We have continued to be fifth grade leaders with our kindergarten buddies, and those of us that read or served were very well prepared.
-ClassDojo- please look for a link in your inbox with instructions for joining the site! By joining, you can log on and check your child's progress with behavior. We are loving ClassDojo! Keep up the great work! (If you can't access the site, please let me know and I will help!)
-Lastly, book orders came home today. Please look them over with your child and submit any orders by 9/26.
Have a great weekend!!
